I just bought a Craftsman 5 HP Chippe4r/Shredder, Model 247796890, I realize now that it is an older model, just don'r know how old, I have a down tree limb in my back yard, it started when I went to see it, I brought it home, started it, but then noticed that the blade wasn't sharp, neith were the Flails, I downloaded the manual, saw in there where the Flails can be reversed, but should be done by a tech. I carefully took the Flails apart, inspected them, the one side of the Flails looked like they were chipping rocks they were so bad, so I carefully took them apart, reversed them and put the unit back togetherm now I get a metal to metal sound and sprks coming out the discharge chute, should I go back in there and put them back to their original position? Also, The Chip It chute's bolts broke off before I bought the unit, is there a way to replace the bolts? It looks like the unit wasn't taken care of the way I would take care of it. Now it is harder to start, I have to use either to start it.

Thank you for your question on the Chipper Shredder. It looks like to me that this is a 1987 model chipper shredder. Please do not use ether to start the engine. This has an aluminum bore in the engine an ether will wash any lubricant off the cylinder walls and Gaul the walls.

If you need to use ether then the engine has a fuel or compression problem. If you use anything you can use WD 40 at least it has some lubricant in it. It may have sat with old fuel in the carburetor and that is causing you the starting problem.

As far as the sparks on the flails did you put all the spacers back to make sure you have the correct gaps to match the cutting fingers. They may be bent and when you reversed the flails they are now hitting. In order to change the bolts for the chute you will need to remove the flail housing from the engine mounting plate to get inside the housing. I hope this will help and please let me know what you find and we can continue to troubleshoot if you need it. Hi Sam, I did not know that the flails had to be gapped, I put the spacers in the correct order as with the washers, I put the flails back the same way that I found them, and still there is a slight scraping sound, I guess with the carb I will need to have it looked at by a Sears tech. This Chipper I bought looks like it has a l0ot of problems with it and I don't know if it would be worth the additional money to get it healthy again, Looks like it needs a muffler, a new air filter and foam pre filter, also Sam, the studs for the 'Chip it chute' Looks like they are either 'pressed' in, or similar, how would I get them out so I can put other bolts in there? Thank you for the update on the chipper shredder.

If the air filter and foam filter were in bad shape it is possible that the engine has been breathing unfiltered air which may be why it is so hard to start. (Worn cylinder wall and poor compression). Also the carburetor may have also suffered from the poor air cleaner system along with old gas left in the carburetor. The Chip shut may have those welded studs and will have to ground off re-drilled and bolts with nylock nuts put on so they won’t vibrate off. The gap on the flails may be right but they may be worn just enough to not fly straight pass the cutter fingers without hitting them. Please let me know what you find and I will be glad to help you further.
