I'd use DuIK (free script) to make bones (nulls for the puppet pins) the trick is to have your Expansion setting in the Puppet tool to zero or close to it. With DuIK you could even rig it with inverse kinematics (IK) which I would do too cos it makes it easier to animate. But if you're in a rush just using the bone nulls is great.:) EDIT: Sorry let me correct myself if you're animating a rope/fishing wire thing with a rig you probably need to switch it to FK (Forward Kinematics) this basically lets you rotate each pin and if you parent them to each other you can get a nice smooth motion. The DuIK alows you to switch from IK to FK and then you can control all the rotating from one controller. I know this sounds crazy but if you play around with it it makes sense. Edit: Nevermind the script - under position, link your null to the position of the puppet pin, the only requierment is that the null has to be linked to the layer with the puppet effect, otherwise rotation, scale and all that goes insane.
Ignore all the following. You can parent a null to a puppet pin but it takes a bit more logic because the puppet pin position is relative to the puppet itself. If you move the puppet, the coordinates of the puppet pin don't move. The imaginary comp has a black solid with the puppet effect attatched to it - it is named PuppetDoll. We take the position of the PupperDoll remove the anchorpoint position from it to get the location of the top left corner (which the puppet tool looks at as the 0 point for all it's coordinates.
